It was February 2005 when I planned a surprise birthday get-away to New Orleans for my husband. Last minute business obligation almost ruined my plans but thankfully, it was resolved in time for us to catch our flight. And it was truly our luck to see and experience New Orleans prior to hurricane Katrina which devastated the city in August of 2005.

We experienced a vibrant, lazy and festive town with interesting architecture, old cobble-stoned streets and alley ways filled with lively music and artisans selling their crafts. We visited the nearby swampland and admired its unique beauty and ecology as our eyes followed the long strands of moss hanging from cypress trees into the murky waters and the occasional spotting of gators, snakes, nutrias (a rodent) or the Great Egrets(of heron family). We also were enchanted by the surrounding plantations with their gorgeous mansions and gardens exuding an heir of an era long gone.

Here is New Orleans as we saw it…

Enjoy and have the “Bestest Day”!
