What do animals have that we don’t? Many a thing. But, I believe they revolve around their logic and realistic way of life. Sounds funny, yet it is so true. They do things for good, solid reasons. They plan their days based on what they need to keep them going for another day. No long term plans here, no waste of time and brain cells. Wanting what they actually need, clear thinking, and a plan of action paired with a bit of luck yield content and full belly for yet another day. They hunt to eat, kill to defend and mate to procreate. Logical, effective and worthwhile!
Most of what we do is to satisfy our many –often instant and always changing- moods and desires or those of our loved ones. At other times, we do things for the mere reason of “just because we can”. In spite of our generally good intentions; we rarely do things for good and solid reasons. Why? Because we are humans and as such; way too complicated to be simple. If we were less complicated and more complex; we could afford to let our logical mind lead us in doing the right thing, more often than not. We could yearn for and do what were good and made sense— what could ultimately result in true happiness and bliss. Ah, such a Star Trek-like era that would be! We could then be positively proud to call ourselves humans. As a lifetime Star Trek fan, I am reminded of the wise words of Mr. Spock, “It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want”.
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to aim for –to want things that actually can make and keep us happy and fulfilled in life? We just need to find what “those things” mean to each one of us. It is a grave problem to solve; but is worth a lifetime of happiness.
“After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true. “
